The day when, with our dyed green hair, we'd run from house to house eating corned beef and smoking one pack of Parliaments among the 12 of us with the parents nowhere in sight...because they were all staggering down the alleys with plastic cups of green beer. The day when the Chicago River was green, everyone was Irish (even though everyone was Irish), and the raucous fun everyone seemed to be having pretty much escaped me, cuz it seemed like any other day on the South Side, except that everyone had made an agreement to walk south together for hours and everyone else agreed to watch.

This weekend on East 4th Street, the New York Neo-Futurists can guarantee you the experience of mob-mentality fun and wonderment and maybe even pizza-eating, and that the color green has greater than a 1 in 6 chance of being spotted on our stage. You bring the cabbage; we'll bring the food coloring and these new plays:

Who's Not Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Eevin Hartsough)

The absence/presence of light (Joe Basile)

Budding Mis-contextualizations in Bucketry (Rob Neill)

In honor of Womens History Month the Neo-Futurists use found text to turn the tables (Erica Livingston)

Remembrance of Things Lost 1969-2007 (a partial list) (Rob Neill)

Urban Optimist (Chris Dippel)

High-Five! (Eevin Hartsough)

Spinnin' A Dirty Feckin' Yarn (Jacquelyn Landgraf)

New Week Sneak Peek 2/29-3/1

WHEW!! It's been a busy week. You know, cutting plays, thinking of plays, writing plays, watching Busey get busy with Garner, Jimmy Kimmel f*** Ben Affleck and Obama dance with Ellen, pretty much for the sake of writing plays. At least, that's how I live with myself each week for spending hours online catching up with the Joneses. My new year's resolution is to "market" better. This means marketing myself, the neos, and yes, even you, the audience. So here it goes.

The picture above is from Friday, January 11th, 2008. I asked everyone in the picture to tell me a little about themselves. Here's the scoop from Left to Right.

Matthew Mackey, originally from Bloomingburg, NY, but now he lives in midtown Manhattan. Matthew is in love with someone that he shouldn't be in love with because right now that person could never fully love him back. (so sad)

John Nicholas LaMedica III, (is this last name spelled right? i hope so) but everyone calls him Nick. He lives in Manhattan but he's originally from Newark, DE. The sentence Nick told me about himself is, "She's from Ronkonkoma and she has turned me into the poet I've always wanted to be." (nick is mysterious)

Jordan Elisabeth Gothke, (I'm not sure I spelled this last name right either, sorry again) she's from Columbus, OH, and lives in Bowling Green, KY. She said she was here just visiting but felt like she looked so homeless that she could lie on the sidewalk and people would give her money. (i think she looked great)

This picture is from Saturday, January 12, 2008. I got all the way up in their laps that night and I look like a stiff although I was very comfortable. Here's their info from Left to Right.

Emily Doe is from central NJ, but she lives in Union Square (FANCY!) now. She is extremely close with her family, and she would have given her last name, but her overprotective family advised her against it. She's also a law student. She can knit, but only scarves, and she ate a Kit Kat bar that once belonged to Bob Dylan.

Dan Rodman, he's from South Jersey but now he rolls from the Financial District and he says that's not his choice. He likes Sufjan L orchards. (Now I goggled this a lot, I have realized I am terrible at reading handwriting so maybe I read it wrong but my guess is it's Sufjan Stevens who you can download from theorchard.com but Dan correct me if I'm wrong)

Lauren Melnick, she was born and raised in NYC and still lives here and when she was seven years old she was delirious from a high fever and shouted, I don't want to be Batman anymore!" (it's a lot of work being batman and then you add a fever to it, my god!)

Well, there they are! Six of our cutest audience members! A lot of them are repeat offenders and I love that. That's why they had the balls to sit on the front row. Thanks to the BBC headline feed that pipes right into the frame of my browser window, I can (in true Neo-Futurist style) randomly click on any headline for fodder whenever I need to pen something topical. Sometimes my random clicks provide me with information that could directly affect my lifestyle, like "Disease risk to mozzarella output!". Sometimes they simply fascinate me, like "Poisoned websites attack visitors". And then there's the really really really British news items, that often befuddle me.

Today, it was the news that Kumble captured his 600th test wicket that left me scratching my head. Yet, the humor surrounding the two nations separated by a common language is perhaps even more delightful for the British this week, as a video featuring Crazy Town mayor Tom Cruise in which he spoke at length of Scientology surfaced. I worry sometimes that this is seen by those outside of the United States as an index of American culture. Worse, I worry that it IS and index of American culture. We called this building home in 2004, back when we first started picking fights with theater in New York. I was looking through some of those old plays (admittedly, a very UN-Neo-Futurist thing to do) and I was surprised at how many I actually remember. Given that we've produced 1122 plays to date, that's a lot of space being taken up in my brain, especially considering that a large percentage of those plays aren't even relevant anymore.

The irrelevance of such a large portion of the Too Much Light... canon is truly a great testament to our achievement, as we fight each week to write toward the timely. Had you come to the Kraine at 10:30 on any weekend in 2007, you might have learned that there was a vote in Iraq or that an unsettling number of nooses have appeared in America this year or that Dick Cheney has a bastard grandson. You may have felt a twinge of sadness remembering that for once, Marcel Marceau really is in a box, and that he is in good company with Norman Mailer, Captain America, and Coney Island. Perhaps you already knew that whales don't speak English or that New York tax code is antiquated or that it rains a lot in England, but those events were particularly significant to the world this year, definitely to us, and hopefully (dare I say, consequently?) to you. Do you know the content of Executive Order #13233? That Patti Lupone may or may not appear in Gypsy next year? That New York has an embarrassing track record on gay marriage when compared with its neighbor across the river? That there was an act of unspeakable violence on October 10th? Maybe there were things that we told you that you didn't want to know, like the fact that a certain homosexual wizard once-upon-a-time hated muggles, or that the Doody family eats faggots (according to the BBC, anyway). I suppose there are things that you can dispute as 'fact,' like the legitimacy of Sesame Street or the illegitimacy of Barry Bonds' home-run record or the quasi-legitimacy of Suzan-Lori Parks' as a Neo-Futurist. But some things are indisputable: Play number 10 was did indeed express profound solidarity with its brothers on the picket line. Once upon a time, it truly was a new thing to say "It's 2007" (yes it was).

There were also very personal stories that have since crashed and burned. Kevin cried during Kid Nation. Eevin (the same Eevin who this year amassed a disturbing collection of boogers, fingernails, loogies, and hair, both human and cat) loses about 100 IQ points when in the presence of Barry Shapiro. Borg would do anything for his friend, Jason Bowcutt, and Jacq's friend Roommate Dave would do anything for Jacq. Erica has lost (figuratively and literally) some people very important to her. Shitty bartender Jenny finally got her green card. This September, my 11-year old began sixth grade at the same middle school from whence his old man was unceremoniously expelled (he's almost 12, and after 4 unsuccessful months at said middle school, he'll be moving to a new school on Wednesday). Ryan has loved and lost. And he learned to swim - maybe you were there to see that. Maybe you were there when Sarah learned how to play chess. Maybe you were there when Jeffrey's older self came from the future to see him in Too Much Light (actually, we're not sure if this happened or not, but perhaps YOU spoke to the elder Cranor!). Maybe you were there to see myself, Rob, & Jeffrey (in ascending order of heterosexuality) playing tonsil hockey with another man for the first time. Maybe you saw the effects of the Neo-Futurists inadvertently conditioned to express violence when in the presence of bossa-nova.

Even 2007 seems like eons ago right now, much less our opening in Brooklyn. If you saw all of that (and everything that I'm omitting), then I lay prostrate before you. If you saw some of it, then perhaps I budge from my sprawl now and again for bathroom breaks, but I thank you all the same. And if you missed it all, well friend, we look to the Neo-Future, hopefully to see you in 2008.

thanks

turning japanese?

Those fluent in Japanese may appreciate this review of Too Much Light.
